In 2004, Angel.com signed up for Socialtext’s hosted wiki service and almost immediately the user satisfaction and adoption increased. Not only did Socialtext’s enterprise-class features address the core functionality requirements, but it also provided an easy-to-use, web-based solution that was reliable. Over time, Angel.com quickly saw the adoption of the wiki spread from the early adopters in product management and engineering to include operations, marketing, sales, professional services and even technical documentation staff. "For Angel.com, Socialtext wikis increase productivity by 10%, saving each employee 3-4 hours per week, which equates to $500,000 savings annually."

With Socialtext, Boston College found the wiki provided a valuable ability to enrich the classroom through up-to-date content and active discussion. The Intro to Management class for example integrates relevant news content, from sites like The Wall Street Journal, Businessweek and The New York Times, using RSS feeds and creates a ‘virtual newstand’ to support the in-class activities. In order to publish content to the wiki, the faculty and students are all registered with access to update the wiki using the simple-to-use, web-based interface. Email is also used as a complementary tool for both inputting content into the wiki by emailing directly to the wiki page that needs updating, as well as using email to notify users of any changes to wiki content.

Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein (DrKW) is an investment bank headquartered in London and Frankfurt. With 6,000 employees, it has offices in New York, Paris, Luxembourg, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. The DrKW installation of Socialtext, internally branded as DrKWikipedia, sits alongside a traditional intranet; B2Evolution blogs; the Microsoft Sharepoint collaboration and communication service; and the MindAlign instant messenger client. The aim was to allow users to swap instantaneously between different modes of communication, depending on which is most appropriate. "Socialtext was chosen because we are regulated, we need to make sure that everything we do is recordable, archivable, searchable and retrievable. Given the market we operate in, we need to ensure that we prevent market abuse, avoid any risk of breaking down Chinese walls, correctly manage confidential information and yet still have better work flow." - JP Rangaswami, the Head of Alternative Market Models

"A collaborative project with Socialtext is currently in progress with a focus on using enterprise wiki implementations to support research projects as well as day-to-day staff functions." Researchers at the Annenberg Center for Communication, which studies digital media, deployed Socialtext’s Workspace software nearly a year ago. According to Todd Richmond, the center’s managing director, the site helps out with a number of day-to-day staff functions. Example: Rather than asking an employee to jot down notes during a meeting and e-mail participants the results, Richmond simply enters information directly onto the site while the meeting is in session, thereby sparing researchers time and hassles.
Socialtext's wiki use rapidly evolved from strategic planning to day-to-day coordination and communications, supported the brainstorming and launch of a new product and has led to promising experiments in group writing. "Using Socialtext Workspaces for group communication has reduced email volume dramatically to result in soft cost savings in excess of $1 million per year for a 50 person team. Project communication accelerated the project cycle of a four-month project by a month. We used to have over 100 group emails per day. Now it's rarely one per week, we've saved a month in a four-month software project, and everyone is on the same page."
Using Socialtext, Stata Labs has realized significantly faster product cycles, increased to optimal customer service quality (nearly 0% repeat requests) and yielded soft cost time gains that would save an enterprise-level workgroup of 50 more than $350,000 per annum for support alone. "Working on a wiki has cut the daily phone calls we made on a raft of projects to one a week. I could justify the cost of the wiki just from the lower teleconferencing bills." - Aaron Burcell, VP Marketing, Stata Labs
Soar Technology Inc. in Ann Arbor, Mich., uses blogging tools from Palo Alto, Calif. based Socialtext Inc. to keep an up-to-date engineering notebook on his ideas about a particular project that can be accessed by other project participants. "One of the disadvantages of a paper-based engineering notebook is that it's hard to find things unless you want to go through it manually, so I decided to use the blog feature of Socialtext's software to keep track of my ideas. I would type them in, and then they're immediately searchable using another feature of the software." - Jacob Crossman, a software engineer at Soar Technology Inc.
Institute for the Future initially used Socialtext Eventspace to facilitate a workshop led by Howard Rheingold. IFTF currently uses Socialtext Workspace to support collaborative learning in consulting engagements with Fortune 500 executives.
